Alan McCormack was born and educated in Liverpool, and then trained at RADA. He worked as an actor for approximately three years, playing Tony Lumpkin in She Stoops To Conquer at Theatr Clwyd, Mold, then as the second lead opposite James Mason in a Channel Four Film based on Eric Satie’s Opera, The Death Of Socrates.
Alan then moved onto directing, setting up his own small theatre company in London which toured Fringe Venues and Schools with set text plays. From there, he worked for numerous drama schools before commencing a contract with Wormwood Scrubs Prison as Drama Director.
At The Scrubs, he directed, to great critical acclaim,
Steven Berkoff’s East and Howard Barker’s The Love of a Good Man. The
latter was instrumental in the research then undertaken by The Royal Court
Company, producing Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good. In
fact, the playwright later dedicated that production to Alan’s Prison Group. He
concluded his work at The Scrubs by filming Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming,
before moving on to Stratford to work for the RSC as Terry Hand’s Assistant
Director for approximately 18 months. Alan collaborated with Terry Hands
again, later at The Chichester Festival
on The Visit, starring Lauren
Bacall and Josh Ackland.
Alan’s main pleasure is to work with new writers and has spent many years with Bryan Oliver, conducting rehearsed play readings all over London of new and innovative work.
He left the profession in 1995 to help raise his family and currently works as a Senior Manager for a leading Transport Company in South West London. Unfortunately, he has been subjected to constant and rigorous counselling throughout his entire life, as he is a fanatical supporter of Everton Football Club!
